Known to be where the Polynesians first landed, Kalae is a historical area that is the southernmost point of the Hawaiian Islands and the second southernmost point in the United States. The entire area is registered as a National Historical Landmark, called the South Point Complex. This is also known for its ancient Hawaiian ruin called Kalalea Heiau. This area is accessible by driving south on South Point Road. The road splits at the 10-mile marker with the left fork heading to the Kaulana Boat Ramp and beginning of the Papakolea (Green Sands Beach) hike. Closer to the point are Tawhiri Power's 14 brand new GE turbines, which was completed in early 2007 and powered 10,000 Big Island homes. Located farther south than any other restaurant in the USA, Hana Hou Restaurant is a popular place to stop and eat.
